USA Hockey 2022 Nationals Hub

The automatic berths have been earned and the at-large bids have been awarded. Teams have been seeded and placed in pools, and the schedule is set. All that’s left now is for the puck to be dropped, the players to compete, the memories to be made and the championship hardware to be handed out.

USA Hockey Youth and Girls National Championships are set to be held at various sites around the United States from March 30 through April 4, with more than 300 teams and nearly 5,000 boys’ and girls’ players ages 14 through 19 competing for Tier 1 and Tier 2 championships.

Youth (Boys’) Tier 1 championships are held for the 14U, 15U, 16U and 19U age groups, while there are girls’ tournaments for the 14U, 16U and 19U divisions. Tier 2 championships are held for 14U, 16U and 18U boys’ teams as well as 14U, 16U and 19U girls’ teams.

All National Championship games can be seen live and on-demand at www.HockeyTV.com

USA Hockey does an amazing job running the championships while also providing all the information we need to follow the tournaments, but there is so much available that wading through it all and finding exactly what we are looking for at times can be overwhelming. So, we’ve decided to create this National Championship Hub that you can refer to every day between now and the end of the championships to (hopefully) find exactly what you are looking for in one or two clicks.

Here are the dates and locations of this year’s USA Hockey National Championship tournaments:

  • Youth (Boys) Tier 1 14U – Chicago, Ill. March 30 – April 4
  • Youth (Boys) Tier 1 15U – Plymouth, Mich. March 30 – April 4
  • Youth (Boys) Tier 1 16U, 18U – Rochester, Mich. March 30 – April 4
  • Youth (Boys) Tier 2 14U – Kalamazoo, Mich. March 31 – April 4
  • Youth (Boys) Tier 2 16U – Troy, Mich. March 31 – April 4
  • Youth (Boys) Tier 2 18U – Irvine, Calif March 31 – April 4
  • Girls Tier 1 14U, 16U, 19U – Pittsburgh, Pa. March 31 – April 4
  • Girls Tier 2 14U, 16U, 19U – West Chester, Pa. March 31 – April 4

At the Tier 1 level, 64 boys’ and 48 girls’ teams will compete for national championships as each age group is comprised of 16 teams spread out across four pools. Teams play one game against an opponent in their pool each day for the tournament’s first three days, with the top-two finishers in each pool advancing to the quarterfinals.

March 31

#11 Culver Military Academy 7, #2 Mount St. Charles 5

If this was a football or basketball game, we would have set whichever team gets the ball last will win. It felt like that until Culver finally buried an empty netter and put away a tenacious group from Mount St. Charles. The score was 1-1 after one, 3-3 with six minutes left in the second and 5-3 in favor of Culver after two periods. That four-goal second period outburst provided the separation Culver would need, but even after scoring to make it 6-4 with 2:43 left, Culver couldn't relax. Ryan O'Connell scored 41 seconds later to cut the margin to 6-5 before Miles Muth hit the open net to ice it with 20 seconds remaining. Micah Berger led the MSC attack with a pair of unassisted goals and an assist. It was a total team effort for Culver, with seven different players scoring: Muth, Hayden Stavroff, Colin Kessler, Hayden Lewis, Jonathan Hunt, Kyle Kudrna and Colin Kessler.Vaughan Makar made 37 saves to earn the victory in goal.

April 1

#6 Buffalo Regals 2, #3 Yale Jr. Bulldogs 1

After a scoreless 40 minutes, the Regals scored twice in the opening 12 minutes of the third period and then held on after Yale's Makai Tarjmo made things interesting by scoring with 3:38 reamaining. Ryan Walsh and Dylan Hryckowian scored for Buffalo, but the story of the day was Austin McNicholas and the 27 saves he made to earn the win in goal.

#5 BK Selects 4, #4 St. Louis AAA Blues 1

Bishop Kearney remained unbeaen in a battle for the top seed in the Liberty Pool. Ryan Conmy got the scoring going with just 1:01 left in the first period, followed up by a Charles Major tally just 1:47 later to open the second frame. Miles Meltzer and John Kneidel also scored to ice the game in the final period. Andrew Clarke netted one for the Blues in the middle frame. Jack Fialkoff stopped 11 Blues shots to earn the victory in goal.

Jake Gutwirth snapped the scoring drought with 15:45 left in the third period only to see Shattuck's Hunter Anderson and Jackson Potulny respond with two goals in slightly more than a minute. Clay O'Donnell opened the scoring in the first period, but Jonathan Lanza's first of two goals ensured the game would be tied at one after the first period. Alaska's four-goal second-period barrage, which featured single goals by Nicholas McLennan and Simon Binkley and a pair of markers by Garin Ludwig, overcame Nicholas Christianson's first-period tally and gave them a 4-1 lead with 4:30 left in the second period. The Storm took the hint, though, and went on a four-goal run of their own with two second-period goals in a 14-second span and a pair of goals in the first half of the third. Tier 2 Tournament Field

At the Tier 2 level, another 192 teams qualified or were invited to compete at Nationals. Within each age group, teams are placed into conferences according to the number of registered players in their states. Youth (boys’) tournaments have between eight and 16 teams in each conference within an age group, and the conferences are labeled 1A, 2A and 3A. Girls’ age groups are divided into 1A and 2A conferences of 12 teams each.

National champions are crowned for each conference. So, for example, in the 14U Tier 2 Youth division, 1A, 2A and 3A national champions will be crowed. 1A represents teams from states with fewer registered players, while 3A is for teams from states with higher numbers of registered players.
