The Frenzy is About to Begin: NHL Frozen Frenzy Guide
The Frenzy is back!
That’s right, starting Tuesday at 6 p.m. EDT when the Philadelphia Flyers host the Washington Capitals, the second edition of the NHL Frozen Frenzy goes live. In case you missed it last year, Frozen Frenzy is a night in which all 32 National Hockey League teams are in action, playing in 16 games with starting times staggered so fans can view at last parts of every matchup.
Fans can switch to a different contest between periods of the main game they are watching or bounce back and forth to catch any exciting endings, overtimes or shootouts. And those sports afficionados with multi-television setups for football Saturdays and Sundays can keep tabs on two or three games at once while using one of the TVs or a computer to bounce around and catch the action from various venues.
Or we can let ESPN do that for us as once again long-time hockey promoter John Buccigross puts on his Scott Hanson hat and hosts an NFL Red Zone-style whip-around show that will bring viewers the key moments they might have missed from all the games.
For United States viewers, ESPN’s pregame show "The Point" begins at 5 p.m. EST on ESPN2 and ESPN+. The whip-around coverage starts at 7 p.m. on ESPN+ and also airs on ESPN2 from 8 p.m. until midnight. Buccigross will be joined in the studio by Kevin Weekes and P.K. Subban. The program will feature the best goals, hits and plays of the night.
While there is no similar studio show in Canada, every game will be available for viewing via national or regional network broadcasts. Fans who want to coordinate their own whip-around coverage will need to steam SportsNet+ and use their remote, keyboard or mobile device to jump from game to game.
For U.S. viewers, the ESPN mother ship will be showing a triple-header nationally, beginning with the Metropolitan Division matchup between Washington and Philadelphia. The second ESPN National game between Colorado and Seattle faces off 8:30 p.m. EST followed by Los Angeles vs. Vegas at 11 p.m.
Once the Frenzy gets underway at 6 p.m. Eastern, there’s no turning back. The puck drops on the Florida-Minnesota game at 6:30 p.m. and after that a puck will drop somewhere every 15 minutes until 10:30. There is a 30-minute break between the start of the 10:30 contest between Anaheim and San Jose and the final nationally televised matchup in Las Vegas.

Capitals at Flyers – 6 p.m. EDT
The new-look, younger and faster Caps are 3-1-0 and looking for their fourth-straight win against Coach Torts and the always-scrappy Flyers. Philly, on the other hand, is 0-3-1 and looking for its first win. The Flyers are led by impressive rookie Matvei Michov, who has 2-2-4. Meanwhile, Alex Ovechkin buried his first goal of the season last time out to begin his chase of Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record. He also has 3 helpers, while linemate Tom Wilson has been on fire with 5 goals in 4 games.
Wild at Panthers – 6;30 p.m. EDT
The defending champs are 4-2-1 and sitting on top of the Atlantic Division as they host the 3-0-2 Wild. Sam Reinhart has picked up where he left off last season with 5-7-12 in 7 games to lead Florida, while Anton Lundell has added 4-4-8. As expected, Kirill Kaprizov leads the way for Minnesota with 2-6-8, with Matt Boldy adding 2-4-6.
Lightning at Devils – 6:45 p.m. EDT
Up-tempo and exciting New Jersey is 5-2-1 with 11 points to pace the Metropolitan Division after opening the season vs. Buffalo in Czechia. The Devils have played at least three more games than every other Metro team except Pittsburgh. Tampa Bay is 3-2-0, good for fourth place in the Atlantic Division. Dynamic center Nico Hischier is tied for the New Jersey team lead in scoring with 5-3-8 along with Stefan Noesen, who has 2-6-8. Death, taxes and Nikita Kucherov leading the Tampa Bay attack. The future Hall of Famer has 7-3-10 in 5 outings.
Stars at Sabres – 7:00 p.m. EDT
Dallas is one of the NHL’s hottest teams after two weeks of action at 5-1-0, but Winnipeg has done them one better in the Central Division at 5-0-0. After opening the season in Czechia vs. the Devils, the Sabres are 2-4-1 and one point out of the Atlantic Division basement. Speedy Roope Hintz is the top offensive threat for Dallas with 3-4-7, while Logan Stankoven has dished out 7 assists. Alex Tuch tops the Buffalo scoring sheet with 2-5-7.
Rangers at Canadiens – 7:15 p.m. EDT
The Rangers hope to extend their season a few more weeks this year, while the Candiens are hoping for a return to playoff contention. New York trails New Jersey by two points in the Metro Division at 4-0-1, while Montreal is 2-3-1 and a point out of last place in the Atlantic. High-flying Artemi Panarin has five more points than the next-closest teammate with 6-6-12. Vincent Trocheck has 2-5-7. For Montreal, Cole Caufield has 6 goals in 6 games and 7 total points to lead the team, one ahead of Juraj Slafkovsky’s 1-5-6. Slafkovsky is out with a shoulder injury.
Maple Leafs at Blue Jackets – 7:30 p.m. EDT
Toronto is another team looking to play a little deeper into the spring after more than 50 years of postseason frustration. The Jackets are looking to do something special to honor the memory of Johnny Gaudreau. The Leafs are 4-2-0 and a point behind first-place Florida in the Atlantic Division. Columbus is 2-3-0 and a point ahead of the last-place Flyers in the Metro. Surprisingly, William Nylander sits atop the Leafs’ stats page with 5-2-7 alongside Mitch Marner, who has 1-6-7. Auston Matthews is not far behind at 3-2-5, though. The Jackets are led by Yegor Chinakhov’s 3-4-7 and Kirill Marchenko’s 2-4-6.
Red Wings at Islanders – 7:45 p.m. EDT
Patrick Roy is hoping his championship pedigree with rub off on an Islanders club that always seems to be in the mix but never gets very far in April or May. New York is off to a 2-2-2 start, good for fourth place in the Metro Division, while Detroit is at the bottom of the Atlantic Division at 2-3-0. The Red Wings are hoping to take their rebuild one step further this year after missing the playoffs on the last night of the regular-season last year. Scoring has not really been the Islanders’ forte in recent years, and this season appears to be no different. Noah Dobson leads the team with 4 points, all on assists, while seven other players have three points apiece. Lucas Raymond also has 4 assists to lead Detroit in scoring, but he’s tied with Dylan Larkin (3-1-4) and Alex DeBrincat (2-2-4).
Jets at Blues – 8:00 p.m. EDT
St. Louis hopes to hand 5-0-0 Winnipeg its first defeat of the season. The Blues are 4-2-0 and just 2 points behind the first-place Jets. Winnipeg still has Connor Hellebuyck, one of the world’s top five goalies, and veteran Mark Scheifele is off to a red-hot start with 5-3-8 to lead a balanced lineup that has seven players with 5 points or more. Philip Brobert (1-5-6) and Jordan Kyrou (2-4-6) each has six points to lead St. Louis.
Canucks at Blackhawks – 8:15 p.m. EDT
Vancouver and Chicago both are looking to find their way to the postseason this year, but the Canucks figure to be more likely to get the job done. The Canucks are 2-1-2 and in fifth place in the Pacific Division, while the Hawks are 2-3-1 and in sixth place in the Central. Brock Boeser leads Vancouver with 3-2-5, just ahead of Jake DeBrusk, Conor Garland and Quinn Hughes, each of whom has 4 points. Connor Bedard and Teuvo Teravainen pace the Chicago offensive attack with 7 points apiece.
Avalanche at Kraken – 8:30 p.m. EDT
Colorado has been one of the biggest surprises early in the 2024-25 season, but not for good reasons. The Avalanche opened the year with four straight losses before bouncing back with a pair of wins. At 2-4-0 and just four points ahead of winless Nashville in the Central Division, Colorado looks to make it three straight victories against 4-2-0 Seattle. Despite the slow start, three Avs have 11 or more points, led by defenseman Cale Makar (2-10-12). Nathan MacKinnon has 2-9-11, and Mikko Rantanen has 4-7-11. That talented veteran trio needs more support from the depth players, however, as the next-closest player has 5 points, and after that no one has more than 3. Seattle, on the other hand, is led by Jared McCann (3-5-8) and Jordan Eberle (5-2-7), while five other players have four points apiece.
Bruins at Predators – 8:45 p.m. EDT
Boston, which traditionally is one of the NHL’s best early-season teams, faces a Nashville club that is looking for its first win after five setbacks. Boston is 3-2-1 and a point behind Toronto in third place in the Atlantic Division. The Preds, who added veterans Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault in the offseason, have been outscored, 23-10, thus far. They are led by Flip Forsberg, who has 2-3-5. Surprising Cole Koepke paces the Boston offense, which has been extremely balanced, with 3-3-6. Six other players have either 4 or 5 points, including superstar forward David Pastrnak.
Hurricanes at Oilers – 9:00 p.m. EDT
Carolina has seemed poised to make deep playoff runs the past few seasons, but after multiple playoff failures is it possible that their window has shut? The ‘Canes are 2-2-0 and just a point out of the Metropolitan Division basement so far. Edmonton, as usual, hasn’t set the world on fire to start the season. The Oilers are 2-4-0 and 2 points in front of bottom-dwelling and winless San Jose in the Pacific. Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov each has two points to lead a Carolina team that has scored just 12 goals in four games. The usual suspects, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, pace the Edmonton offense. McDavid has 1-5-6, and Draisaitl has 3-2-5. They will need to ramp it up, though, and get more support from depth players if the Oilers are to duplicate last season’s run to the Stanley Cup Final.
Senators at Utah Hockey Club – 9:15 p.m. EDT
It seems like every year Ottawa is one of the NHL teams expected to show dramatic improvement, but it never comes to fruition. This season, the Sens are off to a solid start at 3-2-0 as they look to flip that script. Utah seems to have found new life after leaving Arizona and is off to a 4-1-1 start, which has them sitting one point behind Winnipeg and Dallas in the Central Division. Jake Sanderson, Tim Stutzle and Brady Tkachuk each has 7 points to lead Ottawa, while Drake Batherson is a point behind them and Josh Norris has added 3-2-5. Clayton Keller (4-4-8) and Nick Schmaltz (0-7-7) lead the way for Utah, with Logan Cooley, Dylan Guenther and Barrett Hayton having contributed 6 points apiece.
Penguins at Flames – 9:30 p.m. EDT
The Pens are hoping their veteran Hall of Fame core can lead them to one more season of glory, and Calgary hopes to build upon a hot star that has them at 4-0-1 and on top of the Pacific Division. Pittsburgh is 3-4-0, which places them fourth in the Metro. Evgeni Malkin, who recently scored his 500th career goal, has turned back the clock. He has 2-9-11 to lead the Penguins in scoring and is five points ahead of Lars Eller and Sidney Crosby. Jonathan Huberdeau and Rasmus Andersson have six points apiece to lead the Flames, with three other players having tallied five points each.
Sharks at Ducks – 10:15 p.m. EDT
It’s a late-night battle of California in Anaheim as the improving Ducks take on a San Jose club looking to make a leap in the standings this season. The Sharks are looking for their first win after opening the campaign 0-4-2, while Anaheim is three points out of third place at 2-2-1. Tyler Toffoli leads San Jose with 4-3-7, followed by Mikael Granlund at 0-6-6. Troy Terry paces a Ducks squad that has only scored 12 goals in five games with 3-1-4. Leo Carlsson and Ryan Strome have 3 points each.
