Week 23 Weekend Wrap - National Championship Fields Taking Shape
USA Hockey National Championship tournament fields continued to round into form over the weekend as more boys’ and girls’ Tier 1 district champions were crowned around the United States.
The following Nationals berths were determined:
- Michigan Girls
- Southeastern Boys & Girls
- Mid-Am Boys & Girls
- Pacific Girls
- New York Girls
- Atlantic Girls
This year’s USA Hockey Nationals are scheduled to take place between March 30 and April 4 in the following locations:
- Youth (Boys) Tier 1 14U – Chicago, Ill. March 30 – April 4
- Youth (Boys) Tier 1 15U – Plymouth, Mich. March 30 – April 4
- Youth (Boys) Tier 1 16U, 18U – Rochester, Mich. March 30 – April 4

Michigan Girls
Much like New York, Massachusetts and Minnesota, in hockey-hotbed Michigan the Tier 1 state champions are awarded berths to the USA Hockey National Championship tournaments. Michigan figured out which of its Tier 1 girls’ teams would advance to Nationals last weekend.

Southeastern District Youth and Girls
At the Tier 1 level, the Southeastern District is comprised of teams in Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida and Tennessee. The clubs represented last weekend included Team Maryland, the Nashville Jr. Predators, Florida Alliance, the Carolina Jr. Hurricanes, the Washington Pride and the Washington Little Capitals.
Play opened March 3, with games being played at three Virginia rinks, and ran through March 6.

Atlantic District Girls and Boys
The Atlantic District, which includes New Jersey, Central and Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware, determined its Tier 1 girls’ Nationals qualifiers last weekend at the 14U 16U and 19U age levels. Meanwhile, youth (boys') teams in the 14U, 15U, 16U and 18U age groups competed in qualifiers for the right to play in three-game series the following weekend that will determine the district champions and Nationals berths.
All Atlantic District girls’ games were played at the Ice Vault in Wayne, N.J., and could be seen live or on-demand at www.hockeytv.com.

Mid-Am District Boys and Girls
USA Hockey’s Mid-Am District Tournament features Tier 1 teams from Western Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. On the youth (boys’) side, six teams qualified in each age group – 14U, 15U, 16U and 18U. The tournament started March 3 with 18U youth games, while the other youth age levels opened play March 4. Preliminary-round play continued through Saturday evening, after which the top two teams in each age group were paired in Sunday’s championship games.
In the girls Mid-AM Tier 1 District Tournament, at the 19U level, No. 20 Pittsburgh Penguins Elite already had qualified for Nationals as a host team, leaving No. 17 Gilmour Academy and No. 29 Culver Academy to battle it out for another potential berth Saturday. No. 20 Gilmour and No. 16 Pens Elite both will represent the Mid-Am District at Nationals in 16U play, while No. 5 Pens Elite and the No. 35 Cleveland Lady Barons will compete in Nationals at the 14U level.
The tournament was held at UPCM Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry, Pa., so all games could be seen live or on-demand at www.LiveBarn.com.

New York Girls
Another state with enough teams and clubs to warrant being its own district, New York, held its Tier 1 girls’ qualifying tournament in Amherst, N.Y., March 4-6. Six teams competed in the 14U and 16U divisions, while a pair of 19U teams will face off for Nationals berths.
