USA Hockey Nationals Day 3 Recap
Round robin play has come to a close in Dallas with quarterfinals scheduled for tomorrow morning. While there were a few upsets and interesting twists, the top teams in both Tier 1 and Tier 2 got #1 seeds into the quarterfinals.
On the Tier 1 side, I thought both the Chicago Mission and Compuware showed some vulnerability during their games against the LA Selects and the Cleveland Barons respectively, yet both pulled away to win by three. The quarterfinals feature six of the top nine teams in the US with the #14 Dallas Stars and the #19 Mid-Fairfield Blues rounding out the field. The Chicago Mission will face the Dallas Stars, while Compuware plays Mid-Fairfield. In other action Syracuse plays LA and Shattuck-St Mary's will play Colorado. As I said yesterday, I'm still expecting to see Compuware play the Mission on Sunday.
In Tier 2 action, the LA Selects 95 team defeated Affton and earned a #1 seeding. Affton jumped out to an early lead, but LA came back strong and defended their #1 MYHockey ranking with pashion. Allen Park also earned a #1 seeding in the quarterfinals. The quarterfinals tomorrow will see the LA 95's take on the Dallas Stars Selects, Allen Park play Darien, Red River Valley play the Dallas Stars, and Affton take on Niagara.
Action and emotions definitely increased today and I anticipate more of the same tomorrow as 12 very good teams go home losing their final game of the 2008-09 season.
