The Weekend Wrap for Jan. 30 - Feb. 2: Hosts Win MacPherson, Florida Exposure & AEHL U15 Showcase
As January became February and youth hockey teams all over North American geared up for the stretch run of the 2024-25 season, there were several high-level Boys Tier 1/AAA tournaments taking place around the continent from Jan. 30 through Feb. 2.
From here on out, other than Presidents’ Day Weekend, most of the remaining hockey will consist of final regular-season league games and playdowns or playoff contests. While a few USA district tournaments and state championships will be decided before the end of February, many leagues will begin postseason play as teams jockey for positioning in state, district, regional and provincial tournaments on both sides of the border.
We said goodbye to January during the weekend of Jan. 30 through Feb. 2, ushering out the first month of 2025 with plenty of high-level tournament action at the 41st annual MacPherson Hockey Tournament, hosted in Ontario by St. Andrew’s College; the Florida Exposure Cup; and the Alberta Elite Hockey League U15 AAA Leduc Showcase.
A highly anticipated event on the campus of St. Andrew’s College in Ontario, the 41st edition of the annual MacPherson Hockey Tournament did nothing to diminish its reputation as one of the top tourneys on the Boys Tier 1/AAA annual calendar.
As usual, this year’s field was stacked, with Northwood School, Brunswick School, the Bishop Kearney Selects, Victory Honda, Culver Academy and the Long Island Gulls crossing the border from the United States to compete against the hosts and an all-star team of U18 players from the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.
The GOJHL team won the 2023 tournament, while St. Andrew’s captured the 2024 title. United States-powerhouse Shattuck-St. Mary’s won the 2022 and 2023 championships.

As always, the 7 p.m. EST game Friday, Jan. 31, was the official opening-ceremony contest, attended by the St. Andrew’s school community and families, alumni and friends of the school. This year’s official opener featured USA 18U Tier 1 No. 3 Culver Academies taking on the hosts, who are the top-ranked Canada Boys Independent Prep team.
St. Andrew’s exploded for the game’s first four goals – three of them coming in the opening 40 minutes – and never looked back in what turned out to be a 6-2 victory. Aidan Lane scored twice and added an assist for the hosts, while teammate Kieren Dervin contributed a goal and three helpers.
Since the first tournament in 1984, St. Andrew’s has welcomed teams from Alberta, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Quebec, Saskatchewan, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania as well as a variety of regions in Ontario.
All MacPherson Tournament games that were played at LaBrier Family Arena were streamed via the St. Andrew’s Hockey YouTube Channel. Additional contests were played at Aurora Community Centre and Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex, both of which offer LiveBarn feeds.
Games began the morning of Friday, Jan. 31, and ran through Sunday’s 1:15 p.m. EST championship game. The third-place game was Sunday at 11 a.m.
