HARBORCENTER Set to Open in October
HARBORCENTER is a new, state-of-the-art hockey and entertainment complex, built by Buffalo Sabres owners Terry and Kim Pegula in the city’s Canalside district. The building, which is connected to First Niagara Center, the Sabres home, opens in late October. This facility will be a one-stop destination for hockey fans of all ages, complete with two NHL size ice rinks, the two-story (716) Food and Sport restaurant, a one-of-a-kind Tim Hortons Café and Bakeshop, and additional retail space. The 650,000 square foot complex will also be home to the Academy of Hockey and an innovative, high-performance training facility operated by IMAPCT Sports Performance. A 205 room full-service Marriott Hotel opens on the property in the spring.
Despite being months away from the facility’s opening, HARBORCENTER’s Academy of Hockey spent the summer implementing its initial round of programing, including team outreach sessions, skill development sessions, and a professional style development camp for elite pee wee players. The Academy will offer a wide range of fall and winter programs, designed to augment the work players are doing with their current teams.
HARBORCENTER will be home to the Buffalo Junior Sabres Youth Hockey Program, which consists of teams spanning from the Junior-A OJHL to the pee wee level, the Canisius College Golden Griffins (Division I) and Erie Community College (Division III). This coming season, the complex will host dozens of events attracting some of the top hockey talent from across North America. In 2015, HARBORCENTER will stage the eighth annual International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 Women’s World Championship and the International Paralympic Committee Ice Sled Hockey World Championship.
HARBORCENTER will be connected to First Niagara Center by a pedestrian bridge, forming the only three-rink complex in the National Hockey League. The Rinks at HARBORCENTER will be located on the sixth floor, above a 750-space parking ramp. For more information on HARBORCENTER, visit their website at www.harborcenter.com.
