Road to Nationals: The Champs Are Here!

Updated April 7 at 11:00 p.m. EDT

Well, we've come to the end of the road for the 2023-24 season.

Startting last April 2, top youth and girls Tier 1 and Tier 2 teams from all over the United States descended upon ice rinks in various locations around the country to compete in the USA Hockey National Championships.

The dream became reality for many teams in the weeks leading up to Nationals as automatic bids were awarded to state and district champions, with the rest of the participants receiving at-large bids two weeks ago.

National Championship play got underway for Youth and Girls Tier 1 teams Tuesday, April 2, with the Tier 2 tourneys starting April 3. All of the tournaments run through April 7.

USA Hockey High School Nationals were completed March 24 in West Chester, Pa. Congratulations to all the winners!

For USA Hockey Youth Tier 1 teams (predominantly boys), at the 13O (13 Only, 2009 birth years) age group and older (14U, 15O, 16U and 18U), state and district tournament results are used to determine which teams from a given region of the country earn automatic berths for the USA Hockey National Championship tournaments.

Girls Tier 1 and Tier 2 teams also compete for automatic bids to Nationals in those states and districts at the 14U, 16U and 19U levels. Boys Tier 2 automatic bids are awarded to state champions from around the country, with some higher-enrollment states receiving more than one auto bid.

The rest of the competing teams at Nationals receive at-large invitations from USA Hockey.

During the final week of February, the Pacific District, which includes Tier 1 and Tier 2 programs from California, Washington, Alaska and Nevada, crowned its champions and awarded its automatic Nationals bids.

The Atlantic, Central, Michigan, Mid-Am, New England, New York, Northern Plains, Rocky Mountain and Southeastern districts determined which of their teams would earn their automatic bids during the first few weeks of March.

States such as Michigan, Minnesota and New York, which have the highest number of players per capita registered with USA Hockey, are treated as separate districts. Their state champions earn automatic berths to Nationals, while districts in which many of the players play on varsity or junior varsity high school teams – such as Minnesota and Massachusetts –crowned their champions in October and November before the prep seasons got underway.

In some areas of the country, various league or state champions are awarded the opportunity to compete in district tournaments, while in areas like the Northern Plains, where fewer teams compete, there may be a series of games between the top clubs to determine who advances to Nationals.

Therefore, Youth champions will be crowned for 1A, 2A and 3A categories in each age group (14U, 16U and 18U), while for Girls Tier 2 National Championships, 1A and 2A champs will be crowned at all three age levels.
