MHR Week 12 Weekend Wrap
Our Week 12 Games of the Week featured boys and girls tournament action from around North America with some of the top teams from both the United States and Canada competing in various events at an assortment of age levels.
Two of our games came from a unique Boys event in Minnesota that included highly ranked teams from both nations and wound up producing a championship game with the top-ranked 14U teams from the U.S. and Canada facing off.
Another of our Week 12 highlighted games came from a tournament in Saskatchewan that included many of the top U18 and U22 Canadian Girls teams.
And our final game took place at a holiday tournament in Rhode Island that boasted four of the perennial USA Hockey national-championship contenders from Mount St. Charles as well as some other strong programs from around the U.S.
It was a big weekend in Fairbault, Minn., on the campus of perennial U.S. hockey-powerhouse Shattuck-St. Mary’s. The Sabres hosted a unique 14U Boys showcase that included the top-ranked Tier 1 teams from the U.S. and Canada as well as the top-two AA teams in Minnesota, who also happen to be ranked second and third overall in the state.
In addition, Shattuck’s top-ranked 15U team hosted No. 5 Pittsburgh Penguins Elite for a three-game series, while the No. 1-ranked SSM 16U team welcomed the 16th-ranked Chicago Mission for a pair of tilts.

Meanwhile, Shattuck’s 15U team took on No. 5 Pens Elite Friday at 9 p.m. EST, Saturday at 1 p.m. EST and Sunday at 3 p.m. EST.
#1 Shattuck St. Mary’s 15U Boys vs. #5 Pittsburgh Penguins Elite
Game 1 – Pens Elite 3, Shattuck 2
Pens Elite outscored the Sabres, 2-1, in the final frame, getting goals from Braden Hundertmark and Caden Harvey to rally for the 3-2 win. Harvey’s game-winner was a short-handed marker with just 1:52 remaining. Drew Grasser had the other Pittsburgh goal, while Chris Nichols picked up the win in goal. Copper Soller and Levi Harper scored for Shattuck after the teams skated to a scoreless first period.
Game 2 – Pens Elite 5, Shattuck 4
This game opened and closed with a bang as Shattuck scored three first-period goals and led 4-1 after Emilio Bedoya’s goal early in the third period before Pens Elite rallied for four scores in the final 15 minutes to steal the victory. Luca Blonda, Caden Harvey, Nik Rossetto and Michael Ferentino scored in the final frame for Pittsburgh after Rossetto had netted Pens Elite’s first goal to cut the margin to 3-1 in the middle stanza. Timothy Hale tallied once in the opening frame for the Sabres, with Nolan Beddow adding a pair of tallies 15 seconds apart. Jackson Johnson earned the win in goal for Pittsburgh.
Game 3 – Shattuck 5, Pens Elite 2
The Sabres rallied from two tough losses to avoid the sweep, getting goals from five different players and solid goaltending from Xavier Wendt. Nolan Beddow, Levi Harper, Emilio Bedoya, Caden McBride and John Riffey scored for Shattuck, with Bedoya and Harper adding single assists. Nik Rossetto and Xavier Lieb tallied for Pens Elite, which concluded the weekend with an overall season record of 24-9-2. The Sabres are 21-8-2.
Shattuck’s 16U squad hosted the Chicago Mission at 3 p.m. EST Saturday and 11 a.m. EST Sunday.
#1 Shattuck St. Mary’s 16U Boys vs. #16 Chicago Mission
Game 1 – Shattuck 3, Mission 3
Chicago scored the game’s final three goals to erase a 3-0 deficit over the last two periods and earn the tie. Ethan Baker’s tally with 12:53 left in the third tied the game at 3 after Ryan Aaronson had scored a short-handed goal 2:11 earlier. Jacob Borzecki got the Mission on the board in the second period, with Aaronson picking up an assist. Anthony Bongo, Clarke Nehmens and Alexander Donovan scored in the opening 24 minutes of play to stake the Sabres to a 3-0 lead.
Game 2 – Shattuck 2, Mission 1
The Sabres tallied twice in the final period to rally from a goal down and earn the victory. Wyatt Cameron’s goal with 6:52 remaining held up as the game-winner after Noah Davidson tied the game earlier in the final frame. Jacob Hutchen gave Chicago a 1-0 lead with 8:38 left in the second period. Garrett Glaser held off the Mission over the game’s final six-plus minutes to earn the victory in goal. The win improved Shattuck’s record to 30-2-2, while the Mission fell to 20-15-4.
Shattuck-St. Mary’s Showcase Championship Game
#1 USA Shattuck 14U (1), #1 Canada U15 Calgary Edge School (0)
The Sabres concluded a perfect 4-0-0 weekend and improved to 29-1-1 on the season by winning a battle of the top-ranked teams from the U.S. and Canada. Shattuck also beat Minnesota’s second-ranked Moorhead Spuds Bantam AA, 6-3, and USA No. 5 Pittsburgh Penguins Elite, 4-3. Edge School was 3-1-0 on the weekend, knocking off USA No. 40 Team Illinois, 6-1, Minnesota No. 3 Osseo Maple Grove, 8-4, and USA No. 14 Florida Alliance, 8-3. The title-game loss left them with a 25-3-0 record.
Mandi Schwartz Memorial Tournament
Top U18 and U22 prep teams from all over Canada traveled to Wilcox and Milestone, Saskatchewan, last weekend to compete in what the tournament website describes as “the largest female U18 tournament in Western Canada.” The tournament started Thursday and ran through Sunday with 16 Tier 1 teams competing in four pools.
This year’s field included Canada’s top-five 18U Tier 1 Girls teams and seven of the top 15 as well as two top-seven Canada U22 Girls Prep programs. Those clubs also are ranked #16 and #26 overall nationally in the U22 Canada Women’s Tier 1 category.

Mandi Schwartz Memorial Tournament Championship Game
#1 U18 Red Deer Chiefs 3, #4 Edmonton Jr. Oilers 2 – SO
The two teams traded goals in the first and third periods and played a scoreless overtime period before the tournament title was decided by a shootout. Jaecia Joyce was the only shooter out of eight who tried to score in the shootout, lifting the top-ranked Chiefs to the championship. Taya Christie made 23 saves during game play and stopped all four Jr. Oiler shootout attempts to earn the victory in goal. Lyvia Butz and Chloe Goofers scored goals for Red Deer, with Goofers also picking up an assist. Claire Carruthers notched a goal and an assist for Edmonton, with Ella Dunham-Fox adding the team’s other goal. Mackenzie Gould-Sharpe turned aside 24 Chief shots for the Jr. Oilers.
Paul D. Merritt Overspeed Hockey Memorial Holiday Classic
This tournament, which was held at various locations in Rhode Island Thursday through Sunday, included USA Boys Tier 1 14U, 15U, 16U and 18U divisions. Some of the games were hosted on the campus of perennial national-championship-contender Mount St. Charles, which entered its teams in each age group.
Twelve organizations from around the U.S. competed in the tournament along with the Canadian International Hockey Academy from Rockland, Ontario. Games were played at Mount St. Charles, Providence College and Brown University as well as at the Smithfield Municipal Ice Rink.

The top-two Minnesota Boys 14U teams faced off in one of the top pool-play matchups at the Shattuck-St. Mary’s Showcase. Moorhead sprinted to a 3-1 lead after the first period, but the Sabres exploded for the game’s final five goals to earn the 6-3 win. Wyatt Cullen scored all three goals for the Spuds, with Pavel Goryachev assisting on two of his tallies. Ethan Sung scored twice for Shattuck, with Logan Urben, Camden Zaporzan, Maxwell Dessner and Gerry DiCunzolo each adding single tallies. Dessner added an assist, with Colin Grubb dishing out a pair of helpers. . Hagan Bach earned the win in goal.

Another of the top pool-play matchups from the Shattuck-St. Mary’s Showcase featured Canada’s No. 1 U15 Boys AAA team taking on Minnesota’s third-ranked 14U club. The two teams battled through two high-scoring periods, with Edge holding a 6-4 lead before icing the game with a pair of third-period tallies. Brock England led three Edge players with multiple tallies, notching a hat trick, with Luke Jamison and Adam Halat adding two goals apiece. England also picked up an assist to complete his four-point day, while Joaquin Geras dished out a pair of helpers. Mirco Dufour had the other Edge goal. Jaden Roueche, Ryder Meyers, Wyatt Kuznik and Samuel Nelson scored for OMG, with Nelson and Roueche each adding an assist. Leif Oaten was the winning goalie.
Canada Girls U18 Tier 1

Duncan McNeill Arena – Wilcox, Saskatchewan
This was the marquee pool-play matchup from the Mandi Schwartz Memorial Tournament and ultimately determined which team from Pool D would advance to Saturday’s semifinals. Saskatoon skated to a 4-2 win in this one before falling to the No. 4 Edmonton Jr. Oilers, 3-1, in the semis. The Stars got third-period goals from Haley Braun and Avery Bairos to break a 2-2 tie and earn the victory. Peyton Gabruck added a goal and an assist for the Stars, Shayla Koroll dished out two assists and Avery Bairos finished with two goals and a helper. Madelynne Nafziger and Tatem Starlight-Yellowfly scored for Calgary. Ava Drabyk stopped 34 shots to earn the win in goal.
USA Boys 16U Tier 1
#26 Mount St. Charles (5) vs. #35 North Jersey Avalanche (2)
Thursday, December 7 at 6:00 p.m. EST
Adelard Arena – Woonsocket, R.I.
Two programs with a long history of success at USA Hockey Nationals met in a 16U tilt at the Paul D. Merritt Overspeed Holiday Hockey Classic in Rhode Island. Mount St. Charles entered the tournament having played the fourth-toughest schedule in the country and used that experience to roll to the championship game with a 3-0-0 record before falling to South Kent School, 5-2. That left MSC with an overall record of 18-16-2. North Jersey was 15-12-3 heading into this opening-round matchup and had outscored its opponents, 95-88. This loss snapped a five-game unbeaten streak for the Avs, who went 2-1-1 at the tournament and headed home with a 17-13-4 record. They tied the No. 67 Westchester Express, 3-3, before the game vs. Mount St. Charles and closed the tourney with a 4-1 win against the No. 78 Colorado Rampage and a 4-1 victory against No. 68 Team Maryland. In addition to the victory over North Jersey, MSC defeated Westchester, 6-1 and the Colorado Rampage.
