Week 11 MHR Games of the Week
This week, we settle back into a more normal youth hockey routine after a big holiday weekend in the United States. It seems like for American Thanksgiving teams in the U.S. either use the weekend as an opportunity to take a break and spend time with family or to pack up and travel to a large tournament in a faraway place.
With that weekend in the rear-view mirror, some parts of the continent are done with club hockey for the time bring, so prep-school and high-school action is picking up in those areas. In other parts of North America, league play is in full swing and the next few weeks will bring us many holiday tournaments and great matchups between teams from different regions of the continent.
In Minnesota and neighboring states where high-school hockey is king, the highest-level of hockey played at the Peewee and Bantam levels is “AA,” but many of those “AA” teams can compete with top AAA programs from other parts of the country. Our Minn-Kota rankings went live several weeks ago, and this weekend two of our Week 11 Games of the Week are Peewee and Bantam AA matchups from the Spirit of Duluth Youth Hockey Tournament.
That tournament features 16 top Bantam AA teams and 16 top Peewee AA teams competing in four pools at each age level. In the Bantam Division, 11 of the top-15 Minn-Kota AA teams are participating, while at the Peewee level, five of the top-seven and six of the top-13 clubs will be playing.
Another of our Week 11 Games of the Week comes from USHL American Cup in New York. The American Cup, coordinated by the junior Tier 1 United States Hockey League, includes top AAA USA and Canada Boys teams competing at the 14U, 15U, 16U and 18U levels.
The tournament includes 36 teams, several ranked among the top programs in the U.S. and Ontario, competing across the four age groups. The weekend event also features two junior games between the defending league-champion Youngstown Phantoms and the Muskegon Lumberjacks on Thursday and Friday.
The USHL is the only USA Hockey-sanctioned Tier 1 junior league in the U.S. and one of two sanctioned “tuition-free” junior leagues. The league has 16 member teams and sends the vast majority of its players on to play at the NCAA Division I level or to professional hockey. The Phantoms have three NHL draft picks on their roster, while Muskegon has one of the top-rated 2024 draft prospects.
The weekend provides a unique opportunity for youth players to observe the highest level of United States junior hockey in person and provides them with exposure to some of the USHL’s coaches and scouts.
For our final Week 11 Game of the Week we head to New York for a matchup between two of the state’s top 12U girls teams. New York’s top-ranked Adirondack 46ers (Tier 2) take on the third-ranked Skaneateles Lakers (Tier 1) in a three-game series this weekend. The 46ers are ranked 35th in the USA Girls 12U overall rankings, and the Lakers are ranked 46th.
