It's finally here!
USA Hockey Nationals week is upon us, and starting on Wednesday, April 29, more than 300 youth (boys’) and girls’ teams from around the United States will begin competing at various locations for national championships at the Tier 1 and Tier 2 levels.
There will be 184 competing teams in the Youth Division and 120 in the Girls Division, with the Tier 1 programs broken down by age level and the Tier 2 teams separated by age group and state USA Hockey enrollment. Forty-eight Tier 1 girls’ teams and 72 Tier 2 girls’ programs will be vying for titles, while on the youth side there will be 120 Tier 2 and 64 Tier 1 programs competing.
The youth hockey version of March Madness started a few days early this year as the first of many Tier 1 USA Hockey district championship tournaments that take place throughout the early weeks of March actually got underway in mid-February
At the Tier 1 level, for the 14U (2008) age groups and older, district tournament results are used to determine which teams from a given region of the country will earn automatic berths in the USA Hockey National Championship tournaments. State champions earn the right to compete in the Tier 2 championships.
During the final week of February, the Pacific District, which includes Tier 1 programs from California, Washington, Alaska and Nevada, crowned its champions and awarded its automatic Nationals berths. In the first few weeks of March, the Atlantic, Central, Michigan, Mid-Am, New England, New York, Northern Plains, Rocky Mountain and Southeastern districts deternined which of their teams would head to Nationals.
States such as Michigan, Minnesota and New York, which have the highest number of players per capita registered with USA Hockey, are treated as separate districts. Their Tier 1 and Tier 2 state champions earn automatic berths to Nationals, while districts in which many of the players play on varsity or junior varsity high school teams such as Minnesota and Massachusetts crowned their champions in October and November before the prep seasons got underway.
In some areas of the country, various league or state champions are awarded the opportunity to compete in district tournaments, while in areas like the Northern Plains, where only a few teams compete, there may be a series of games between two clubs to determine who goes to Nationals. Some of the local and state tournaments that determine which teams advance to districts have been going on since mid-February and others wrapped up the first weekend of March.
Youth Tier 1 championships are held for the 14U, 15O, 16U and 18U age groups, while girls’ Tier 1 national championships are contested at the 14U, 16U, and 19U levels. Tier 2 championship tournaments are held for both genders at the 14U, and 16U levels, with the Youth Division also crowning an 18U champion and the Girls Division holding a 19U event.

In general, each of the 11 district champions – along with a host team in each age group – earns the right to compete at Tier 1 Nationals, with the remainder of each age group’s tournament fields being filled with teams that are offered at-large berths based on their overall record, national rankings and other considerations.

Culver had beaten the No. 52 Sioux Falls Power, 6-2, and No. 12 Victory Honda, 4-3 in a shootout, to pick up five points in the first two games. 2:15 p.m. ET - #14 Nashville Jr. Predators (4), #15 Arizona Kachinas (3)
The Predators exploded for four third-period goals for a come-from-behind championship-game win. They trailed, 2-0, after two periods, but Heather Ajakie started things off early in the third with the first of her three goals. Jenna Majewski responded to keep the margin at two just over a minute later, but Ajakie struck with 13:16 left and again with 11:27 on the clock to even the score. That set up Devon Cavaliere's game-winner about four minutes later. Majewski also recorded a hat trick in this exciting game, but she and her teammates were unable to tie the game in the final 7:36..

Four other Syracuse players scored, but Drew Kopek was the only other Eagle to record multiple points with two assists. Abigail Seaman made 18 saves to earn the victory.
